Wedding photos with a blended family
Blended families need a slightly longer list and a bit more thought about who stands where. The result is usually photos that show your real family, not a tidy template.

Template family photo lists assume one mum, one dad and some siblings. Lots of families don’t look like that. The good news is that blended families usually photograph beautifully once the list reflects how the family actually works.
Three principles
- 1Photograph the family you have. If your stepdad raised you, he belongs in the shots that matter to you, regardless of convention.
- 2Give each household its own moment. A photo with each parent and their family means nobody has to share the spotlight.
- 3Be explicit. Tell people which photos they’re in. Most hurt feelings on the day come from uncertainty.
An example list for a blended family
Mum’s household
- 1Couple with Mum
- 2Couple with Mum, stepdad and half-siblings
Dad’s household
- 1Couple with Dad
- 2Couple with Dad, his partner and step-siblings
Together
- 1Couple with all siblings, half-siblings and step-siblingsOften a favourite
- 2Couple with the whole familyParents on opposite sides if needed
If there’s tension between households
Keep each household’s photos together in one block so people only need to be present for their part. If two people shouldn’t stand next to each other, tell your photographer. They’ll handle the positioning without making it obvious. More on this in family photos with divorced parents.
Flag it once, not on the day
In our planner, mark any two people who should be kept apart. Every shot with both of them is flagged for your photographer automatically.
Build a list that reflects your real family, with faces, and send it to your photographer.
Make my family photo listQuestions people ask
Do step-parents go in wedding family photos?
If they’re part of your life, yes. Many couples include step-parents in a photo with their partner and in the larger family group.
How do you include half-siblings and step-siblings?
A photo with all the siblings together is often a favourite. They can also appear in their own household’s photos.
